COURSE OVERVIEW
This is an introductory‑level course focused on the business of storytelling through
- Empowering student filmmakers or business people to get back into the habit of watching film and television (not social media content) and practicing critical thinking, public speaking and argumentative skills to analyze, discuss and critique what they've seen in a group setting.
- Utilizing everyday technology (i.e., their own smartphones) to tell visual stories that resonate with their personal experience and/or professional goals.
- Covering the basics of marketing and promotional strategy in film and media production, including discussions of branded content and advertising campaigns. Students will gain insight into the practical realities of operating a creative business and navigating professional relationships in film and media production.
Part 1 will occur in the first half of the Spring 2026 semester and will involve screening films and episodic content during class time, followed by deep discussion and paired with occasional reading.
Parts 2-3 will occur in the second half of Spring 2026, with each student being invited to make a short film that is 5 minutes or shorter in duration in a genre of their choosing. Cross‑film collaboration is encouraged and students are welcome to team up.
Throughout the semester, classes are held in a hybrid format, both in person and on Zoom, and students have access to editing software and computers. Returning students are welcome to use class time to work independently on their own projects starting from the beginning of the semester. The course semester concludes with an in‑person screening and discussion of each student’s completed film.
